The theme for the youth in our church this year is Doctrine & Covenants 4:2 “Therefore, O ye that embark in the service of God, see that ye serve him with all your heart, might, mind and strength, that ye may stand blameless before God at the last day.” A theme I think that is perfect for everyone to think about. God wants and needs us to serve others with all of our HEART, MIGHT, MIND, and STRENGTH. This talk talks about all those points of serving with our heart, might, mind and strength.
This Talk on CD, “Embark!” by John Bytheway is an ideal talk for all the youth to hear to prepare them for their years theme! If you haven’t heard John Bytheway speak you are missing out. He is seriously an LDS comedian. He is sooo funny, but after the funny, he gets straight to the point and to the heart and really gets you thinking! In his motivating talk he explains what it means to truly embark — to get fully on board in the service of God with all your heart, might, mind, and strength. Using scriptures, powerful stories, and his characteristic humor, John explains that with the Savior’s help, we can remain on board and eventually stand blameless before God at the last day.
I looked up the word Embark to find out what it really means. Here is the definition.
“embark |emˈbärk|verb [ no obj. ]go on board a ship, aircraft, or other vehicle. put or take on board a ship or aircraft (embark on/upon) begin (a course of action, esp. one that is important or demanding).”
One of the things that really hit me while listening to this talk was that we can’t “half embark” If we are embarking on a journey we are taking a course of action, especially one that is important or demanding. We can’t half embark and put one foot on the ship and one foot on land. When we embark in the “service of God” we can’t half embark. The scripture tells to serve him with ALL our heart, might, mind and strength! Not half! We have listened to this talk twice while driving around and really enjoyed it. My kids are 11 and under and aren’t in the youth program, but they loved an learned a lot from his talk!
