I have a huge testimony of service. It is one of the greatest ways to feel closer to Christ and receive his light in our own lives. Over the last few years we have been doing 25 Days of Christmas Service and my kids have really enjoyed it. They feel so happy after they do something nice for others or even each other. Today in Relief Society it hit me hard while watching this video that we are truly His hands on the earth today. I have always know that, but today it truly sunk in and helped me to see the parallel between how Christ served and how we can serve like he did. We are His hands on the earth today and when we are lighting the world by serving others we are receiving more light into our own life and our light increases.
As We #LightTheWorld by Serving Others, Our Light Increases
I recently read a wonderful talk by Elder Larry Lawrence called The Light of the Perfect Day and it talks about how “Your success in life depends upon how much light you gain while you are here? Success is not about how much money you make or how many medals you win or how much fame you achieve. The real objective of our existence is to gain light.” and one of the main ways to gain that light and share it with others is to serve. “The more you serve, the more you love, and the more you love, the more light you receive.”When we pulled out our Christmas Garland where we put our Christmas Spirit and Christmas Fun activities I added theses that you can get HERE
I added these to the 25 Days of Service that we do along with the other things so that we would be a little more inspired as to how to serve. Every year we used to just picked a service to do each day and sometimes it was hard to figure out what to do or what we had time for. I LOVE that the #LightTheWorld in 25 Ways, over 25 Days calendar has specific aspects of ways that Christ served others. Then they have ideas of what do that day. It has been even more meaningful having each day have a specific way to serve like Christ served.
I have seen my children grow so much in their love for others just by realizing how wonderful it is to serve them. We have done a few things that were on the list, but also my kids have come up with some of their own. We helped a good friend who recently got divorced put up her Christmas lights the other day and my son took the lights out of his room that he had wrapped around his bed so that he could use them for our friends bushes. He also came to me with a list of things he wanted to do to serve his friends. My little ones have been being more kind to each other and specifically tell me about it, and my daughter has been doing secret acts of service all week long. I am excited to see how the rest of the month goes!
If you haven’t started this #LightTheWorld challenge I encourage you to start today by simple serving the members of your family! As you do so may we feel more light in our own selves and continue on to serve others more freely throughout our whole life. When we learn to love serving, we learn to love more like Christ. Remember that our service doesn’t have to be a huge spectacular thing. There are so simple ways of serving others. Be prayerful and God will help you know who or how to serve!
