I’m am a bit of an emotional person. I don’t hide anything. I guess you could say I wear my emotions on my sleeve. For the most part I think most people can tell if I am sad, happy or mad. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not, but it’s who I am! I really love the new movie Inside Out. I liked the message of the whole movie. I think we as humans think that we need to always be or at least show that we are happy, and that sadness, anger, fear and disgust aren’t in us. That we are just Happy, Happy, Happy people! (I said like I was bouncing my ponytail and skipping down the hall) Well life is to hard to always be happy. But I do think that happiness is a very important thing that we should try to seek for daily no matter what is going on in our life. It’s ok to be happy, but feel sad about something or angry or disgusted about something.
In the movie Inside Out, the character Joy wants Riley to always be happy and to not ever feel any of these other emotions. By the end of the movie joy realized that sadness isn’t bad, that sadness isn’t a villain. She’s actually a hero. And that by allowing Riley to feel sad and grieve is actually what helps her move on and change to become better!
I knew when we first saw this movie I wanted to buy it! When I first started homeschooling I remember feeling really impressed to teach my kids about their emotions and why they might feel a certain way. Our children are going to go through life feeling so many emotions and we as parents can’t just sit back and say, “your just supposed to always be happy”. Even though when they are two years old that’s all you really want them to do. You don’t want them to cry because it’s annoying, you don’t want them to get angry or have fears, but always feeling joy isn’t the best thing for them either! We need to experience life in it’s wholeness and sadness and frustration are part of that!
Inside Out Emotions Game
We headed to Target last week to get the new Inside Out movie. We don’t have cable, so we love buying good movies for our home! I thought it would be fun to have a little party with the kids at home after we watched the movie. I have a 2 and 4 year old that both share a lot of emotions though out the day. I thought it would be fun to come up with a game to play with them to help them understand emotions!
My kids LOVE all the characters in this movie! They each have their favorite! I have to explain myself with this game because you will see I added one more emotion. I loved the character BingBong. I thought he was hilarious! So I put him down as silly! I know he was Riley’s imaginary friend, but he was so funny to me. I thought the game would be more fun with him in it! My kids were mad at me at first telling me that he wasn’t one of the emotions, but they were ok with it in the end.
I made these cards with all the characters on them and cut them out for each of my children and laminated them. I came up with 3 games to play with these cards.
Matching – You can play this two ways. Either with the words on one side and the characters on the other, or two character card decks. We played it both ways!
Pick the Emotion – The kids put all six cards in front of them. I used this list of emotions and randomly called out an emotion. I didn’t play this competitively, but I guess you could play it so that whoever had the emotion card up first got a point. We just played that you grabbed the card and then had to make the facial expression to describe the emotion. The kids thought it was pretty funny!
Go “Inside Out” – The last way we played it was like Go Fish, but we called it “Go Inside Out” You can print off however many set of the cards you want and then decided how many makes a match, whether it’s two or four. We had four kids playing and only four card sets printed. Then they pick 3 cards and then had to ask around for a match. We played that you only take one turn no matter what. The kids had a fun time playing the games and acting silly, or angry or fearful! I like my funny kids! Below are all the printables you would need to play these games!
Emotion Cookies
Like always, with any game and movie you need a treat! I though it would be fun to make Emotion Cookies! I bought pre-made cookie dough and these Easy Writer Markers (edible) and had fun letting the kids, and my husband, decorate their cookies according to their emotions. The kids had a great time and we enjoyed watching the movie again! It just came out of video last week. We got our DVD/Blu-Ray copy at Target! Inside Out DVDs and Blu-Rays purchased at Target include 20 minutes of exclusive bonus content and deleted scenes. Target is such a pleasant place to shop and it’s so easy for one stop shopping! The new movies are usually right in the front of the store, but if it’s not there it’s in the movie section!

Inside Out was a wonderful movie. I loved it too, and it helped open my eyes to some realities of emotion I hadn’t really thought of before. I have two little ones the same age as yours, and a 10-year-old, and I think they would love this game!

Such a cute game, and I love the cookies! (I still have not seen this movie! I always see Disney movies right when they come out, and I was sick and my family saw this without me. Still need to see it!)
