Get a Year Family Pass to See Over 270 Museums For Under $100

February 12, 2015 by The Things I Love Most

I am so excited to tell you about this awesome deal I just recently heard about! Last week I was at a homeschool conference and a friend of mine was teaching a class on learning outside the home. She gave a ton of great field trip ideas and fun things to do to educate your children outside the home.  My favorite tip she told us about was how we could see some pretty amazing museums for  killer deal.

Museum Pass

So here is the gist of the deal, then I will link you to the website to help you understand it a little better.

I live in Utah, in a city where there aren’t any amazing museums.  Every time I go up to the Salt Lake Area I want to take my kids to all the fun museums like Thanksgiving point, Discovery Gateway, the Clark Planetariam and the new Leonardo.  But going to each museum cost a lot of money! For my family to go to the Discovery Museum we spent around $50 to get in.  That is something we can’t do very often if we want to go to cool museums.

Now get excited because here is where I tell you about the deal….

At each museum you can buy a one year membership for your family to come to the museum free for a year, but what a lot of people don’t know is that this membership can also get you into over 270+ museums world wide. Yes, I said World Wide.  You know that Museum in Egypt you’ve been dying to go to…well now you can! 🙂 Each museum has a Family Membership, which the basic benefits are for two adults living in the same household and all (in most cases) children under 18.  Each museum charges a different amount for the membership.  For example the

  • Clark Plantariam charges $99 for their family membership pass
  • The Children’s Discovery Gateway chagres $155 for 6 people.
  • The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History charges $100 per family
  • The cheapest I have seen is the Las Vegas Natural History Museum for only $65.  Talk about awesome! * It is kind of confusing how to buy the family pass, but scroll down and you will see “individual memberships”, then click on $65, which is not an individual, but a family pass for you, your spouse and any children under 18.  If you are confused you can also call them on the phone and they are super helpful!
  • Lowell Observatory– This is the cheapest and makes it so you won’t have to miss any museums in Vegas

As you can see, each museum sets their own price for their membership package.  Once you are a member of the museum of your choosing  you have benefits for a year to go freely with your family to that museum.  Most of the museums have benefits that look like this….

 Basic Museum Membership Benefits

  •  Admission for 12 months + Discount in Gift Shop
  •  Discounts on workshop and program fees
  •  Membership includes participation in the Association of Science and Technology Centers Passport Program giving you complimentary admission to over 270 science museums worldwide.

That last one is where seeing all the other museums free comes in.  Buying the basic membership puts you in the Association of Science and Technology Centers Passport Program giving you complimentary admission to over 270+ museums.  I think there are more being added yearly. I’ve heard now it’s around 300+ museums world wide, but I didn’t want to count!

Now here’s the deal, there are 2 exclusions….

1. All ASTC member science centers and museums located within 90 miles of the museum you purchase your membership are excluded.

So you can’t go to any other museum within 90 miles of the museum you bought your pass to.

2. All science centers & museums located within 90 miles of your residence are excluded, besides the one you buy the pass from.

It does say…  *This distance is measured “as the crow flies”, meaning that it is based on the linear radius, not driving distance.

You DO NOT have to buy a membership closest to where you live, you can buy a membership to any museums you choose.

{This deal isn’t the greatest if you live in the Salt Lake Area and want to see all the Salt Lake museums.  You can only see the ONE that you bought the pass from and then you have to go 90 miles away to see any others.}

Check out this list HERE to see what museums are in each state, and read more about the program.

Since I live in Southern Utah and have no museums around me I can really buy anywhere.  I chose to buy mine at the Las Vegas Museum of Natural History because it is by far the cheapest membership I have seen.   Since I am buying my membership to the Vegas museum I can go to ANY museum 90 miles away from it.  The other awesome thing is I don’t have to actually go to the Vegas Museum.  I can buy it online HERE and they will mail it to me!

This deal is great for anyone that has only one museum that they live by and wants to travel to the other ones.  This friend of mine took a summer trip with her family and traveled the U.S. one summer and used passes where ever they wanted all over the country! How awesome would that be!!

So go check out the list. If you don’t live buy a lot of museums, I suggest buying from the Las Vegas Museum because it’s only $65 for your whole family!!!

Museums

Feel free to share this post with your friends and family! And just so you know, I am not getting paid to promote this program at all, I am just really excited to tell my readers about it!

I can’t wait to head to Salt Lake next month and visit a couple museums up there!  Maybe I will even plan a few road trips to see some in another state this year!

What museum would you want to go to first?

*Update – I just heard of this museum in Arizona that is $5 cheaper and makes it so you could go to both museums in Vegas instead of just the one!!  https://lowell.edu/donate/become-a-member/

When we lived in Boise, we had a museum membership there. It was really inexpensive. Then when we moved to Utah, we had so much fun visiting all the area museums for free. It was awesome! Wish the deal would work for us again.

Thank you for sharing this! We’re a homeschooling family and want to start implementing more field trips once the baby is a bit older. This will help so much to keep our costs low!

The link you provided is for last year (when you wrote this) but do you know if it’s every year? Or a limited time thing?

It is for every year and should work each year!

I am so excited about this. We live in Eastern Idaho, not within 90 miles of any of thses museums but we travel to Salt Lake and Portland a couple times a year and would make it totally worth it.
