I’ll be honest, I like Halloween, but it’s not my favorite holiday. I love to see my kids dress up, I love the parties, and fun games. I don’t love creepy stuff. I don’t love scary costumes, but my husband thinks they are fun so one of my kids always ends up being a little more scary than I would like, but oh well. I also don’t like spending money on costumes. I love dress up so my kids, but I like to find them for cheap! When I hear people tell me how much they get their Halloween costumes for and they say they spent more than $10 I think they are a little crazy. I have 5 kids, I don’t want to spend over $50 on Halloween!! To each their own, but to day I am going to tell you ways we have come up with fun halloween costumes that were cheap, but the kids still wear them as dress ups today! We gave our kids a $5 budget this year to come up with stuff and they did eally well! Today I am going to tell you the #1 way we save money on Halloween Costumes!
The Best Way to Save Money on Halloween Costumes
Growing up I wasn’t a huge fan of used clothes because I thought it was weird, but ever since I was a teenager I have loved going into Deseret Industries (also known as DI) and finding fun costumes for Halloween, Date Dances, and even everyday clothes that I might not be able to afford at other places. DI usually has a large selection of like-new costume, and also great clothes you could repurpose into costumes.
DI is the place to go for affordable, unique Halloween costumes. You can get pre-made costumes or make your own from our vast selection of shoes, clothing, and much more. DI also has great employees. they are all usually so kind and willing to help out and can help you put together a one of a kind costume for less than $10. A few year ago we were the Chipmunks and I got a lot of our costumes at DI.
Last year my soon was a football and we just bought this toy bin and cut a whole it it and bought suspenders! It was so fun! This year we found a Ninja Turtle for my 3 year old, a Power Ranger for my 5 year old, a scary Skeleton Costume (our scary one), a Spy Guy, and my daughter found a black leather biker jacket and will be a Biker Chick!
I have also donated some costumes to DI and love that I know a cute little baby or toddler girl is going to love the costumes as much as my daughter did, so consider donating them to DI if you aren’t done using them in your house!
DI also has a wide selection of Halloween/fall decorations and tons of fall clothing. So you can go in and revamp your house and wardrobe for the season in one day!!
Some DI’s have racks and racks of costumes, others have a limited amount or sell out fast. The one we went to only had one rack for kids and one for adult costumes. We found all 4 costumes for our boys on the kids rack and were really lucky. Because DI restocks the sales floor with thousands of new items each day if you don’t find it one day, go back a couple of days later! You never know what treasures you’ll find.
A few other great ideas to spend less on Halloween costumes is to…Borrow from Friends of Family, I love doing this because I get mine so cheap I am totally willing to share! Shop Garage Sales, I found most of my daughter princess costumes at garage sales! I never spend more then a $5! Shop After Halloween Clearance, I have bought a couple of costumes at stores where they are being sold at a 75% discount or more. Sometimes you have to dig through a lot of junk to find a good costume, but I haven’t ever spent more than $5 on a new one.
