Having 3 small children, it is very important to me that they know the real reason of why we celebrate Christmas. I don’t want them to think it’s all about Santa and the gifts that they will receive. I try and do small, simple things that will remind us of Christ’s birth and to have the spirit in our home.
One of the things that we have done, is to have this “gift” that we put under our tree, along with all the other gifts. This special gift is to Christ.
On Christmas Eve as we are done with our other festivites, we read the story in the scriptures of Christ’s birth. Then we have small pieces of paper that we write our “gift” to Christ on for the upcoming year. It may be something like trying to do more service for others. Of course, the kids need help thinking of things.
Then, Christmas morning, we open the box and read what eachother has written. (We remain anonymous, so we don’t know who wrote what).
It is just a small thing, but it is a fun activity that allows us to reflect on Christ and his birth.

That’s such a great tradition! And yes, we moms with three boys need something, ANYTHING to keep us sane and blogging is much cheaper than therapy 😉

We also have this tradition… only we each do our own gift to Christ during one of our Family Home Evenings prior to Christmas and they have been traditionally very small because we keep them throughout the year (easier to find a place for 6 gifts sitting around all year if they are small); they are like goals in honor of Christ – to accomplish before the following Christmas.
I like your idea of having a big wrapped gift there as a constant reminder through the season. 🙂
