Healthier French Fries

September 23, 2010 by The Things I Love Most

Healthy French Fries

My boys, Cowboy and Jack Jack HATE potatoes- mashed, baked whatever, they hate them, so I thought I would try out some homemade French fries because for some reason they think they are “not” made out of potatoes!!  I know they are good for you and I really want them to learn to like them.  Read about the health benefits here and here

Healthier French FriesHealthy French Fries

5-8 potatoes {regular or sweet}  I’ve done both, but sweet potatoes are my favorite.
1-2 T Olive Oil
Salt and Pepper

  • Peel off the skins and cut them in half and slice into French fries.  {make sure they are pretty even in size}
  • Next put on a non stick baking sheeting.  I have a Silpat which I LOVE and recommend to all.  You don’t have to use spray and you don’t have to clean the pan!!!
  • Pour Olive Oil over top or spray it with one of these awesome things
  • Sprinkle with Salt and Pepper
  • Bake in oven for 45 mins on 400 degrees  –  stir half way through

If you want your fries more crispy put them in a bowl of salt water when they are raw. Let them soak for 30 mins and then dry them really well before you bake them!

Mom son loves these now and is always excited when I make them!  It’s the only way I can get him to eat potatoes!

    My kids have allergies pretty bad right now too. We love potatoes all ways. I bet they grow out of their disdain for mashed or baked. Especially if they like fries. My 12 year old makes a baked potato in the mirowave for himself every single day!

    Hailey hates potatoes too. She will eat them sometimes but prefers not to. She isn’t a french fry fan either. Although, the rest of us like homemade fries just fine!! Yum! Thanks for the reminder.

    Hey Kendra, what do you think about frying potatoes in coconut oil? I haven’t tried it, but I thought about it after reading your post here.

    Hmmm…

    xoxo
