Letting Christ In: Overcoming Adversity

Letting Christ In: Overcoming Adversity

When everything is going wrong, you feel no hope, no peace and no happiness. You feel like there’s no getting through and that nothing will ever go right for you again.

Jesus Christ is your reliable remedy. When you let Him into your life, no matter what trial or adversity you’re facing, you will feel hope, peace and happiness and see the light at the end of the dark tunnel.

In a talk to the youth called Rising Above the Blues, but whose message can be applied to people of all ages, Shanna Ghaznavi said, “…ultimate healing will always come from the Savior. He will ease your burdens. His gospel is a gospel of peace and hope. Never doubt that He wants you to be happy.”

A young boy was eager to serve a full-time two-year LDS mission; that is until he arrived at the Missionary Training Center and started having overwhelming feelings of darkness, depression and doubt. He began doubting himself, his testimony and God’s love for him. After a period of feeling this cycle over and over again, he decided to return home early from his mission.

Once home, he felt even worse, like he was betraying God. He kept asking himself what he could’ve done to prevent this situation from happening. But then he realized that’s not the question God is asking.

“What God asks us is, ‘How are you going to get up and move on? How are you going to become a better person? Are you willing to let me in to help you through this process? And are you wiling to let our Savior in to help you through this process? If we can just answer yes to that question… we can be lifted to such unimaginable heights.”

Never let adversity or a situation that didn’t turn out as you’d planned bring you down, make you feel insignificant or keep you from doing good and accomplishing all you’re capable of doing with the Lord’s help. Jesus Christ can make any and every hardship you face better, if you let Him.

So, how can you let Christ into your life?

Recognize you can’t overcome adversity alone.

Christ has been through it all. He knows exactly what you’re going through and how you’re feeling as you go through it. Christ is the ultimate healer. He gives you hope, healing and renewal once you humble yourself, say you can’t do it on your own and turn to Him for help.

Turn to Christ’s teachings.

Jesus Christ is the perfect example of how to best live your life. He taught through word and action how to have faith and live a peaceful life. His life was never easy. He faced His own trials and adversity, but He never complained, blamed God or gave up. He forgave those who wronged Him, loved everyone and endured to the very end.

Make good daily choices.

The small daily choices, like praying, reading your scriptures and keeping the commandments, may seem insignificant in the moment, but they make all the difference. Christ is always there—you just have to get down on your knees in prayer and sincerely ask for His help. He can also help you through tough times when you have a love for the scriptures and study them every day. They are filled with His life and His teachings, and have the answers to all of life’s problems.

Christ will bring you peace and comfort. He’ll help you feel His love and see how God has blessed you when you feel like all you can see is darkness, sadness and negativity. He is the light of the world, and He will bring that light into your life if you bring Him into your life.

Let Jesus Christ become your best friend. The closer you stay to Christ, the better you’ll be able to face life’s adversities. “…In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” ((John 16:33).
