Goal and Gratitude Day #3

January 7, 2011 by The Things I Love Most

Sorry I wasn’t around yesterday.  I am sure I was not too missed, although I know I am loved…right? 🙂

Well my reasoning was because of my 3rd goal for the year which is…

Do something to become a better Mother
Yup,  I took a break from blogging because it just didn’t fit in my day of being a mom and teacher and wife.  And ya know what that’s ok!  I don’t feel like blogging interferes with this, but yesterday was a very busy day and I had a lot to get done.  Normally I blog early in the morning or late at night, but even then I didn’t have time.  So I took a break!  That I know will happen more often especially with baby number 4 coming along shortly, but don’t worry to much I love to blog and won’t let a couple days go by with out saying Hello!
So now you’re probably wondering what I am doing to become a better mother this year?
I am going to stop yelling, getting frustrated, feeling overwhelmed, crying over spilled milk and sometimes wanting to take a long break from being a mom.
Okay, so not really.  Is any of that even possible.  I wish I didn’t yell.  I don’t yell a lot, but I know I will still yell this year.  {Although I am really trying hard not to}.  I know I will always have days that I feel overwhelmed {That just goes with parenting…right?}, and all the other feeling of being a mom will always be there.
Don’t get me wrong.  I LOVE my full time job of being a mom, but it’s hard. And I want to do better this year.  I have a lot of great examples in my life all around me of good moms, and I look up to them so much.  Daily I am having a motherly conversation outside with friends who are so smart and knowledgeable, or with my sisters and my own mother,  and I am very grateful to have them around me.
I have one friend in particular that I have learned a great deal from.  A couple of years ago I was chatting with her about book reading and she was telling me she always likes to read a parenting book and she rotates the other books she reads.  I thought it was a great idea, but never got into it myself.
So this year I am going to read a good Parenting Book once every three months.  I think you can take a lot from good parenting books and even if I don’t totally agree with everything written I know I will learn at least one new thing.
I will share with you when I read them.  The first one I am going to read is…
For the Children's Sake: Foundations of Education for Home and School
For the Children’s Sake
by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay
A couple of other things I am going to do to become a better mother is
  • When my kids are talking to me I need to make sure I stop and listen, and not keep walking around or doing what I am doing on the computer, sewing machine or kitchen.
  • If my kids ask me to do something with them {like play a game, read a book, etc}  I am going to try my hardest to find a way to say yes.  Unless it’s at a ridiculous hour or during quiet time {that’s my time}
  • Take time to just sit with them and chat and talk to them about their days
  • Go on parent/kid dates!  It is always great to have one on one time with each kid.

And  to go along with that, I have learned not just last year, but in all the years I have been a mother, that I am SO grateful to be a mother.  That God trusted me with his sweet children, my sweet children, to be their mom.  I recently read I am a Mother by Jane Clayson Johnson and really enjoyed it.  There is a quote I loved that says.

“You Matter,” Jane reminds women, because “a mother’s work is God’s work” – even on the days and nights that challenge your strength and test your character, and even when the world works overtime to minimize your calling.

I know my calling as a mother is super important, and I am grateful to be a mother!
So here I go off to put my kids in bed, like a good mother should!!
If you have any good parenting books I would love to know your favorite!!

I just love your blog! You always have such great ideas. I have to share how important I think the parent/child dates are. When my grown kids were younger my husband and I would take just one child at a time on a date. They called it there “special day.” It wasn’t until years later after they were grown that they have shared with us how important and special these dates were to them. Keep up the good work :o)

Super idea! I think I should steal it! And you are already an amazing mom and if you were able to accomplish those goals of never yelling and everything else on your list I think I’d bump up your status to “SUPER” mom! Now I just need a few more parenting books. =)

I sort of ran into your blog, and I love it! Anyways, I read parenting books as well. I just finished “How to Talk so Kids will Listen” by Adele Faber. It is AMAZING. I also like “The Soft Spoken Parent” by Wallace Goddard. Good luck!
