Yup, one of our favorite family home Evening treats is homemade donuts. I started making them about once every two months for Family Home Evening treat, and the kids started calling them Family Home Donuts, and it has stuck since! We used to make them the quick and inexpensive way of making them with one of those cans of biscuit dough and then you roll them out poke a hole in them and fry them in oil and then sprinkle them with sugar, powdered sugar or dip them in chocolate!
A few weeks ago I decided to look up healthy donuts. We have gone mainly off White Flour {except for Tortilla’s because I LOVE Costco’s Tortillas and whished they made them in Whole Wheat} I found a great recipe and so for the 24th of July I decided to make them and they were SO yummy. Now don’t look to closely at the picture because they look weird, but they actually tasted pretty good! I will admit they aren’t as good as the “unhealthy” ones, but the kids and my husband {oh and me} didn’t even seem to notice and ate them all up!
I got the recipe from this great blog called Heavenly Homemakers
Here it is…
Family Home Donuts {or she calls them Whole Wheat Cake Donuts}
3 ¼ cup whole wheat flour
2 t. baking powder
½ t. cinnamon
¼ t. salt
¼ t. nutmeg
2/3 cup sucanat
2 eggs
1 t. vanilla
2/3 cup milk
1/4 cup melted butter
Coconut Oil for frying
Mix dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Stir in eggs, vanilla, milk and melted butter. Knead dough a few minutes to make sure all ingredients are mixed thoroughly.
On a floured surface, roll dough to ½ inch thickness. Cut with donut cutter, or biscuit cutter. Heat oil in skillet or electric skillet…enough to cover the bottom of the skillet about ¼ inch. Place donuts into the hot oil to fry for 2-3 minutes on each side. Remove from skillet and place on a paper towel lined plate. Sprinkle a mixture of sucanut and cinnamon, or sprinkle organic powdered sugar over the hot donuts.
Happy Cooking!
Oh and PS… School went GREAT yesterday. My kids were so good! Here’s hoping for many more days just like it!!!

I am not a donut maker but I have a few other healthy recipes I have wanted to try but just don’t have the desire to actually do it. So when you need another healthy donut recipe let me know.
