One Little Match by Thomas S. Monson Book Review

March 7, 2014 by The Things I Love Most

I remember when this story was told in conference by President Monson.  My children’s eyes were glued to the screen listening to the story he told about when he was a child and the lesson he learned about obedience and listening to the spirit.   I have always loved President Monson’s talks become he tells so many great stories!  They should all be written into children’s books!

I was excited when Shadow Mountain asked me to review this new book for children about the exact story my kids kept bringing up these last few months.  With their Daddy being a volunteer firefighter, they understand a lot about fire and safety so they really liked this story!  The illustrations are beautiful and the story is sweet! The one thing I loved about this story is besides knowing that he wasn’t aloud to use matches, he also had a prompting not use the match, but that he ignored it.  This book teaches a great principle to all about obedience and listening to the Spirit in our lives even if we might just think it’s something small and insignificant.  If the spirit tells us “No” we should listen.

Here is a little excerpt from Deseret Book about the book.

Thomas S. Monson loved spending summers at his family’s cabin in Utah’s Vivian Park. One summer day, he and his best friend, Danny, decided to clear a field so they could gather with their friends and have a campfire that night. The tall, stubborn weeds would not pull out easily. So Tommy had the idea to burn them up instead.

He knew he shouldn’t use matches without permission from his parents. But he ignored the feeling that warned him of the danger and raided the matchbox in the cabin. Back in the field, he lit one little match and prepared to set the parched June grass ablaze…

Readers of all ages will resonate with this wonderful true story that demonstrates the blessings of obedience and “the dangers that can come from something as small as one little match.”

You can purchase the book Here.  It would make a great gift for a child in your life!
