Weekend Activities to Do with Your Kids
by Alek Sabin
If you are a parent who works, you know the struggle of finding the right ways to spend quality time with your kids on your days off. It’s far too often that a weekend rolls around where nothing of particular note happens. While some relaxation is a good thing, it’s also important to get out and spend time with your kids doing activities that are going to have an impact on their development and their memories. In honor of that, here are some ideas to help you brainstorm what to do on the weekend with your kids…
Teach them a new skill
Obviously, there are plenty of life skills that kids need to know, if they are going to thrive when they live out on their own. For families with two working parents, it might be more difficult to find the time to fit those things in, which is why it is important to make that time on the weekends. For example, if your child is a teenager, do they know how to change a car tire? For that matter, do they even know how to drive?
Another common occurrence among young people today is that they don’t really know how to cook. As a matter of fact, only a little more than 4 in 10 millennials feel good about their ability to prepare a meal, if needed. If you don’t teach them these things now, then they will find that there’s an abundance of important life knowledge that they’ll be behind on, later.
Play sports in the park
If you want to start fostering a more active lifestyle for your kids, then it’s important to start doing so while they are young. Weekends are the perfect time to get the family out of the house and start building these active habits. Having your kids take up rec sports is a great way to get going on this, but if you’d rather engage in an activity with them, then simply dust off any sports gear you have hanging around your garage and head to the local park to play a friendly family pickup game.
Try some arts and crafts
It’s important to not only foster a physically healthy lifestyle in your child, but also to nourish them, creatively. If you give your child the opportunities to stretch that creativity, when they are young, then it will give their mind the practice to think outside of the box, later in life. For this reason, a crafting day can make an excellent weekend activity that can take place in your own home. Think of a new medium or project that you’d like to try to make with your kids, then pick up the supplies and show them how to get started. This could be as simple as drawing, or could involve making fun crafts for them to wear.
Explore a new place
Oftentimes, even in the neighborhoods that we live in, there are little nooks and crannies or cool shops that we rarely find the time to explore. Show your kids to always be on the lookout for new things by biking or walking to a new spot in town that you haven’t been too, yet. Oftentimes, this can lead your kids to finding new things that they are interested in, and fosters a personality that is always looking to explore.
Take a trip into nature
In the technology fueled world of today, it’s easy for kids to forget about the natural world that surrounds them. However, you can help them get back to basics a little bit by planning little nature excursions for the whole family. This may involve planning out a camping trip for the whole weekend, or could simply be a spur of the moment hike that you make a day of nearby. Either way, getting your kids to enjoy nature promotes them to play outside more and helps balance out the abundance of technology they experience, every day.
