Crayon Hot Rocks

February 19, 2014 by The Things I Love Most

You know that bag of old crayons you have?
The broken ones or ones that aren’t sharp anymore?
The ones you think about throwing away, but shove in a bag because they have got to be useful for something.
Well here is your time to get your craft on and use those crayons.
(How do you say that word Crayon anyway?  I have heard people say “Crown” and Cray-On”)
Your kids are going to think you are the coolest person ever when you do this project!
So here it is….
Crayon Hot Rocks

This is a must have adult supervision activity! But I can assure you, both adult and child are going to love it!! I got the idea from my wonderful friend and my kids absolutely love doing it now!  This project doesn’t take a lot of explaining to do.

  • First gather rocks of all different textures and sizes.
  • Put them on a baking sheet and set the oven to broil.  (You might want to put foil on the baking sheet so you don’t scratch it. )
  • Put rocks in oven for 6 minutes.
  • After they are nice and hot, give each child a glass plate and put 2 paper towels over it.
  • Use a hot pad to place the rock onto the plate.
  • Grab those old crayons and start coloring!

It melts so smoothly over the rocks.  I love how each rock turns out totally different.  The really smooth ones melts it like water color, and the rougher ones hold onto the wax a lot more and it seeps into the grooves.
We did this at my daughters “Arty Party” birthday and the girls loved it!
One of the girls just held the crayon on the top and let it drip down.  Then she grabbed another color and let it drip down and kept doing that until she had the coolest multicolored rock ever!
Don’t you love my sons American Flag?
We thought it was pretty cool!
So there you go.  Go get your craft on with your kids and have a great time doing it!
