Belonging to Heaven by Gale Sears Book Review

May 22, 2013 by The Things I Love Most

Have you ever been to Hawaii?  Do you live in Hawaii?  My friend just moved there….JEALOUS!  OK not sure I would want to move there, but I for sure want to travel there.  Gale Sears, author of Letters in the Jade Dragon Box, has written another wonderful historical fiction called, Belonging to Heaven, which is set in the Sandwich Islands {other name for Hawaiian Islands}.  The descriptive words she used to explain the setting helped me feel like I was there.  Still not there, but felt like I could at least imagine it!.
This amazing story follows the life of 2 men and shows their strength and love for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.   Elder George Q Cannon, one of the first missionaries in Hawaii, show great faith and leadership as he gets sent on a mission, not knowing the language, but having enough faith to know he was sent there for a reason.  His reason we find out is to find a man, Jonathan Napala, who becomes one of the first members of the church in Hawaii.  Jonathan played a huge influential role to the church in Hawaii, and you will love reading about what he went through to do what he did.
This book is a great story of love, faith, compassion and enduring through heartbreak and struggle.  I know you are going to love it!! Be sure to grab a box of tissues though!
Here is what it says on the back of the book…

Descended from the Hawaiian royal line, Jonathan Napela became one of the first—and most influential—converts to the Church in Hawaii. A man of intelligence, social status, and wealth, he used his considerable position to further the gospel in his native land. He developed a lifelong bond of brotherhood with Elder George Q. Cannon, helping to translate the Book of Mormon into Hawaiian and establish a gathering place for the Hawaiian saints in Laie, Oahu. But when his beloved wife, Kitty, was stricken with leprosy, Jonathan made the defining decision of his life. He would leave his life of privilege to become her caretaker and spend the rest of his life on Molokai, the island of lepers. To those who suffered similar heartbreak and banishment, Jonathan’s self-sacrifice became their lifeline. Based on true story, this is an extraordinary novel of a man who chose love in the face of death.
