Goals for the New Year

January 7, 2013 by The Things I Love Most

Every January I talk to my kids about setting goals.  We usually have a family night where we set goals to work on as a family and individually throughout the year.  Last year….we didn’t do it.  I had every intention to, but I never got around to writing them down and posting them for our kids to see them every day.  I looked back at my goals I wrote down on here from last year, but since I didn’t actually see them daily, I pretty much failed at them….But guess what?  That’s ok.  I’m not perfect, neither is anyone else.  We do the best we can and move forward.  It doesn’t mean I didn’t accomplish great things in 2012.  I totally did.  I could write a list of things that could have been “goals” that I just did!  Sure I didn’t completely catch up on my scrapbook, I didn’t read and study all the lessons before church.  But I did do a lot of good things, and I am totally going to give myself credit for them.  This year I really want to make sure that I do at least one thing to improve myself in these 6 areas of my life….School, Hobbies, Friends, Home/Family, Physical, Spiritual.  Examples could be (these were mine a couple of years ago)…

School – Teach Cowboy to read, Be patient during school hours when the kids are being hard
Physical – Do a sprint tri in October, Loose 15 lbs
Friends – Meet new neighbors, be a good neighbor, Pray to know what you can do to help friends in need, listen to the spirit to direct me to know how I can help others.
Spiritual – Study daily, prepare lessons early
Home/ Family – Keep organized with food storage, Start a garden
Hobbies – Scrap up to 08’, Print blog book,

I have written about how we do family goals in several post HERE, HERE & HERE.
I usually make a list of all of our goals on one piece of paper, this year I am going to put our family goals and put them on the door to the garage (laminated) and talk about them every family home evening.  And then I am going to give the kids each their own to put on their bathroom mirror or dresser so they can see them daily.
I made this new chart, the top is for the parents and family goals.  and the bottom one is for the kids.  Write their names right under where it says family goals, Write in the goals and laminate.  I just started teaching Young Women’s and these would be great goal charts for the girls to also fill out for an activity.

Don’t forget…

“When you learn to master the principle of setting a goal, you will then be able to make a great difference in the results you attain in this life.” Elder Ballard

I remember doing the same things with family goals. I like your ideas for posting the goals for the family and individual children. I think your past goals were great.
This year I am not listing my goals because they are always the same but different years. I do the same ones each year and then there are the endless ones that I don’t do.
However I do challenge myself in different areas.
    Blessings on accomplishing your ideas.

I love the quote by Elder Ballard. So true with every aspect of life and I too taught my kids early on about goal setting. It’s so important and they learn so much. – Great post and Happy New Year!
