Homeschooling this year…

November 26, 2012 by The Things I Love Most

I thought I would give a little update about how school is going so far this year.  Being a homeschooling mom is not the easiest thing, but I truly love it.  You have to try a lot of new things if something isn’t working in the schedule, you have to work with distractions and work around appointments and other things.  I am a pretty structured mama and like to start at the same time every day and finish at the same time, but that doesn’t always happen and it is something I am having to learn to get over.

I am actually full day schooling just 2 of my kids, but my 3rd is Preschool age so I try to get him involved as much as I can.  I don’t push it with him.  They learn that by K or 1st grade age they will do school.

Here is a little overview of our day…..

In the morning from about (yes I have to write “about”) 8-9

  • Family Devotional at Breakfast
  • Clean room
  • Hair
  • Jobs  (my kids rotate jobs and do something different every day)  And might I add I haven’t had to vacuum my house for ever because my kids are SO good at their jobs!

9-10ish (sometimes later, NEVER earlier 🙂

  • Oldest does Musical instrument practice, Writes in journal and reads her scriptures
  • 2nd child – We do Language Arts (K12), Spelling and Handwriting.
  • 3rd child does Upstart on the computer.
  • Baby plays in the room where I am teaching the 2nd, watches Elmo, or plays with toys.

10-11
We switch

  • Oldest does Handwriting, Language Arts and Spelling
  • 2nd child- Journal, Scriptures and read a chapter out of a book.
  • 3rd child- Plays with baby brother.

11-12

  • We trade off doing math while the other gets to play the LeapPad, read in their room, or do Typing.
  • 3rd child plays with math games or does other Montessori tasks.
  • Baby eats and goes down for a nap.

12-1

  • Lunch and Recess

1-2:20

  • Core Subject

We have been doing The Family School, which we are LOVING.  The baby is asleep, my preschooler sometimes joins us or sometimes has quiet time in his room.

There are 5 subjects History, Science and Geography (One subject a week taught Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday)  and then Literature (taught Thursday)  and Art or Music (taught Friday).  I rotate weekly between the 3 core subjects and then every 3 weeks I rotate on Fridays between Music and Art.  I am loving the Family School books and plan on using them for the 6 years they

This all doesn’t go perfectly as planned.  In fact these last few days of school my kids have been trading off who wants to pull all my strings and drive me the craziest.  From an emotional 9 year old girl to a hyper 6 year old that can’t stop pestering people.  I just try to ignore the negative behavior and talk to them in a way that they understand that despite their grumpy attitude, I am going to keep moving on with my day 🙂  The other day I even started teaching the history lesson to myself…when they heard me they both realized they were missing a fun lesson and came out with notebook and pens in hand!  It was pretty funny.

I am so grateful to be able to have the opportunity to Homeschool my kids.  It has truly been a blessing in my life.

You are one busy Mother and I admire those who home school. I have one daughter that home-schools her five children.
    Blessing to you!

Wonderful! 🙂 I LOVE homeschooling too. I’m not homeschooling my youngest this year. I sent him to highschool, since his brothers finish this year then leave for missions and I figured I will probably work or go back to school next year. I didn’t want the youngest to be the only one home. But I miss him so much! And it is sad to me that he is missing out on the things his brothers are learning that I know he won’t get in public school. I wonder if he will end up homeschooling again after all. 😮 Homeschooling IS a great blessing! 🙂

I know it has been a while since you posted this, but I love your schedule! I also like your attitude! I may have to try teaching to myself & see how my daughter responds.
