There were SO many amazing talks this last General Conferencee about teaching our children. One of my favorite talks was a talk given by Elder L. Tom Perrys entitled Mother’s Teaching Children in the Home. Yup! LOVED It! Not because I am a homeschooling mom, but because all moms need to realize that they are their children’s main teachers. I love what he says here about his mom “The scope of Mother’s teaching included both secular and spiritual lessons. ”
I seriously could have copied and pasted his whole talk here. It is SO good and so inspiring me to me to want to do better. This is one of my favorite quotes that will become a major part of my own life and how my husband and I will teach in the home.
“Teaching in the home is becoming increasingly important in today’s world, where the influence of the adversary is so widespread and he is attacking, attempting to erode and destroy the very foundation of our society, even the family. Parents must resolve that teaching in the home is a most sacred and important responsibility. While other institutions, such as church and school, can assist parents to “train up a child in the way he [or she] should go” (Proverbs 22:6), ultimately this responsibility rests with parents. According to the great plan of happiness, it is parents who are entrusted with the care and development of our Heavenly Father’s children. Our families are an integral part of His work and glory—“to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man” (Moses 1:39). On God’s eternal stage, it is usually intended that parents act as the central cast members in their children’s lives. Fortunately, there are understudies involved in the production who may step in when parents can’t. It, however, is parents who have been commanded by the Lord to bring up their children in light and truth (see D&C 93:40).”
I like that visual that he puts in our minds that we are in a play {God’s play} and the we are the central cast member in our children’s lives. We can’t leave it up to our primary teachers, school teachers or neighbors to raise our children in light and truth {Spiritual and Secular knowledge}. It is our responsibility and we MUST do it and we can with the help of the Lord. It sometimes seems overwhelming, but when I look back on my life and my amazing mom I know that if I do even close to what she did for her children, my children are going to turn out just fine.
“Parents must bring light and truth into their homes by one family prayer, one scripture study session, one family home evening, one book read aloud, one song, and one family meal at a time. They know that the influence of righteous, conscientious, persistent, daily parenting is among the most powerful and sustaining forces for good in the world. The health of any society, the happiness of its people, their prosperity, and their peace all find common roots in the teaching of children in the home.”
Health, Happiness, Prosperity and Peace all can come from good teaching in the home by an involved father and mother. Isn’t that awesome! I just LOVE it so much. Don’t we all want that for our children. These are all things that I want to implement daily in my family. We have been working on doing these things as a family for a while now, but we are not perfect at them, and we might not ever be, but I know that if my husband and I try our hardest we will be blessed, and so will our children.
He goes on to talk about how it is mostly the mothers responsibility to make sure this teaching is going on {because most of our husband work during the day}, but that you and your husband are equal partners.
Over the next few weeks I am excited to share with you some ideas that we have started in our family to bring light and truth into our house by “one family prayer, one scripture study session, one family home evening, one book read aloud, one song, and one family meal at a time”.
I hope you all have a wonderful week! Come back tomorrow and see my new post on bread and the outcome for my most favorite recipe!

This talk is excellent. I know it’s what I do daily, but I am still just trying to wrap my head around everything that he said! Good stuff!

So good! Sometimes I’m overwhelmed when I think of the things I fail to teach my kids.. like changing their socks every day!( which apparently I have never explained to my 7 year old). I guess there are more important things to teach though, like prayer, fasting, faith, etc. Thanks for the reminder!
