Picking the Perfect Window Coverings + Window Covering Safety

I just recently moved into a new house and getting blinds has been on my mind a lot lately. Especially since we don’t have any  for our big front room windows. The blinds we have in the rest of our house are sun faded and old and I would love to replace them all soon.  The blinds we have had in both of our homes are corded blinds. They seem to always be breaking, whether it is the actual blind part or the cords. A couple of weeks ago I came down to the family room where my three and five year old were playing. They had pulled the blinds all the way up and had wrapped the cord around their neck to be “funny” so they could pull the blind up. Thankfully I quickly found them and told them that wasn’t a good idea and tired the cord up high. All the stresses of being a parent! 

October was the National Window Covering Safety month! It might sounds silly, or something that we shouldn’t have to think about, but many young children have died by strangulation of cords. After reading the statistics, I think it is great that they have a month talking about window coverings and safety. There is an actual Window Covering Safety Council and they encourage families to look at their window coverings and make sure that they are safe from exposed or dangling cords which can be very dangerous. They also encourage only cordless window coverings especially in homes where there are young children. 

Today I thought I would talk to you about how to pick the best window coverings for your home. Since I am in the process of getting rid of all these corded blinds. 

Picking the Perfect Window Covering 

1- Decide what type of window coverings to get.  There are so many options. But think about saftey when looking at all of them.  

• Pleated shades
• Aluminum Blinds
• Cellular/Honeycomb Shades
• Rollar / Solar Shades
• Roman Shades
• Woven Shades
• Vertical Blinds
• Sheer Shades
• Wood and Faux Wood Blinds
• Shutters
• Curtains or Drapes

2- Look for the Best for Kids Certification Label– When making the choice and selecting window coverings, cordless options can be identified by the Best for Kids certification label.

3- Figure out your budget-  Decided how much you can afford. You don’t have to do it all at once. If you need to change your blinds out a room at a time that might be the best way to go on a smaller budget.  

4- Love What Uou Buy.  Don’t put something up in your windows that your hate.  Before installing any window coverings hold them up in the window and look at them to make sure you love them.  Replacing or even installing new window coverings can be expensive, so don’t put them up unless you love them!

5-Don’t forget about saftey.
