Fun with Paracord + 10% Discount For My Readers

July 3, 2014 by The Things I Love Most

Paracord is all the rage these days!  You can make so many cool things with it.  My kids have bought a few paracord bracelets that they love, but we haven’t ever made the bracelets because I didn’t know where to buy the cord or how to make them.  Until I heard about Paracord Galaxy and learned to make them at girls camp this last month!  They are super easy and so fun!

But paracord isn’t just for bracelets.  The paracord from Paracord Galaxy is made from high quality nylon. 550 cord is made by braiding 7 strands together to produce a cord with a minimum breaking strength of 550 pounds. This is the real thing – cord that is strong enough for virtually any purpose in a survival situation. Paracord Galexy has the best selection – Over 600 colors including all the most popular cords.  They have the best value, fast shipping, NO back-orders, and very high quality cord.

I just got back from girls camp and as one of the crafts we made the bracelets and it entertained the girls for a few hours!  They all turned out super cute!

Crafters, youth groups, family reunion coordinators, preppers love paracord.  It comes in a variety of sizes and has literally hundreds of uses.  The most popular items crafters make with paracord are like I mentioned bracelets, but also dog collars & leashes, lanyards and shoe and bootlaces. Many paracord colors absolutely pop under backlight.  Pre-teens and teens love to wear paracord items at blacklight activities such as roller-skating, laser tag, dances and blacklight parties.

Paracord was first used during World War II as the main suspension lines for paratroopers. When it was given to the troops they quickly found many uses for it in surviving the trials of battle. Since then it has been produced for both the military and civilian markets.  Paracord has been used for just about everything from making decorative paracord bracelets to active military service, it has even been used in space when the Hubble Space Telescope was repaired.

Paracord is fun and stylish but also practical. In an emergency it can be invaluable. It can be used for countless applications, from gun slings to securing and holding up emergency shelters. Many people carry a coil of paracord when they go camping, hiking and engage in other outdoor sports. The cord is lightweight and takes almost no room. You barely know it is there – until you need it.
Paracord comes in many different diameters or sizes. The military standard has a nylon sheath that covers the 7 individual nylon strands that make up the “guts” or inside of the cord.  Paracord bracelets and lanyards are commonly used to hold keys, dog tags and small tools via key rings, swivel clasps, d-rings and other hardware. They are practical for use on a daily basis. In an emergency situation a paracord bracelet or lanyard can be unraveled, so you always have a survival cord available. A typical bracelet may be from 1 inch to 1.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches long.  It may be constructed from 5-10 feet of cord.

Paracord has a variety of uses, everything from shoelaces to utility rope and the inner strands have been known to be used for everything from floss to fishing line in emergency situations. When paracord is braided it has many uses in everyday life. It can be used for not only the bracelets but also has been used for:

  • Belts
  • Slings
  • Wraps for handles
  • Key chains
  • Lanyards
  • Bottle carriers
  • Dog Leashes
  • And so much more! {just type in paracord on Pinterest and you will see tons of fun ideas!}
Here are some awesome designs that I saw on Paracord Galaxy’s Facebok page.
My kids would LOVE these!
Not just the standard bracelet!
This braid would make a cook belt. I think this is used as a strap.
My boys would LOVE this one.
They have tons of fun charms and beads to add to your projects.
I love this American flag one.
They also sell them in kits so you can make a variety of bracelets.

Here is a quick video on making the basic bracelet.

Check out more videos HERE on their site to see how to make other styles.

A quick tip on making the bracelets.  You use between 5-10 feet per bracelet depending on who you are making it for.  Measure your wrist. Add one more foot to that. So, if your wrist is 7 inches, then you’ll need 8 feet of cord. And because we are making a two-color bracelet, you’ll need half of that in each color.  Example, assuming your wrist is 7 inches, measure and cut two 4-foot pieces of cord!
