14 Tips for Keeping Your Kitchen Clean

May 19, 2014 by The Things I Love Most

Last year I posted about keeping a clean house, staring in the bathrooms.  Check out the post here.  I had every intention to keep posting along with this series and go from room to room, but I had a baby, and kind of forgot until I started getting a lot of page views on my last post and realized I had planned on writing more. Also because I have been participating in this Spring DeJunk Challenge, I thought it would go Perfectly with it! Check out my Instagram account and follow along using #SpringDeJunkChallenge

Anyway, my tips today are all about keeping your kitchen clean.  The kitchen is the place I spend most of my time during the day.  We have a big open great room in our house and the kitchen is where we tend to gravitate.  Maybe because we all really like food! I don’t know 🙂  If you know me, you know I like a clean kitchen, especially when I am in it or right by it most of my day.  Perhaps if I couldn’t see my kitchen I would let it get messy, but since I can see messes staring me in the face I like it to be clean. People that come to my house probably think I clean my kitchen all day long, but I don’t.  Here is what we do in our family to keep a clean kitchen!

1. If you make a mess clean it up – Start the day with clean counter/table.  It will stay clean if you put everything away…I Promise!

2. Only leave on the counter things that you need. (Not for convenience but necessity) – This one is hard for me.  I don’t like anything on my counter, but some stuff I use a lot, and some stuff If I don’t leave there I will forget to use.  For instance my husband had some medicine he needed to take twice a day all last month, he left it by the blender, I kept putting it back up by the medicine, he forgot to take it.  So finally he told me it had to stay there or else he would forget.  I left it out.

I also have these cups for when the kids are obedient, If I don’t leave them out I will forget all about them.

3. Run the dishwasher at night so you have all clean dishes in the morning.
4. Have each child empty a rack- I never touch the dished after they are cleaned.  My kids, after breakfast empty if for me so that we can load it during the day.
5. Don’t put the dishes in the sink, rinse them and put them right in the dishwasher.

We use the same water cup all day long.  I love my Cup Wrangler!

6. If things are left on the counter during the day, make a pile and have your family members come get them and put them away before they can eat dinner.
7. Rinse the sink and wipe counters after every meal.
8. Sweep up messes as soon as they happen so they don’t spread. {give kids a small dust pan to sweep under their chair}
9. Don’t shove stuff in cupboards or drawers.  Put them where they go.
10. Pick a Cupboard or Drawer to organize and wipe down once a week.
11. Clean your fridge out before you go grocery shopping.
12. Organize your pantry every other week to keep it clean.
13.  Wipe off the face of your appliances once a week

I didn’t put this tip down, but for those who have highchairs, wipe them off after you are done with them!!  Who likes a nasty highchair with encrusted Cheerios stuck to it.  Not me!!

{Speaking of highchairs,  This $19 IKEA highchair is the best highchair ever, along with my hook to the counter highchair.}

 I promise you, if you take these steps, you will have a clean kitchen and you won’t feel like you are cleaning all day! Print this off and post it in your kitchen! Get your family on board and work together!

    This was a great post on keeping the kitchen clean. I too can’t stand to have it untidy.
    Just one question; where do you get the cup holder? I love that idea.
    Blessings!

    I am a terrible slattern , but I wish I was more like you! I would gladly visit your house, then you would be glad to see the back of me so you could tidy away the mess that I create everywhere I go! Xxx
