Our Summer Schedule & 120 Summer Fun Activities

May 24, 2013 by The Things I Love Most

Summer is finally here!  Yeah!  I love summer time!  Having a good 2 1/2 months with my kids without as much structure as there is during the school year!  Don’t get me wrong though, I still like some structure or my kids get bored or they struggle when school starts up again.

Last year I wrote a series of post about 3 ways to enjoy your summer.  Summer Jobs, Summer School, and Summer Fun.

I am a firm believer in having your kids do jobs all year long, especially during the summer.  Then when school starts they will be used to it and will keep doing the jobs they did during the summer.

As far as summer school, you might call me mean or crazy, but I am going to do one hour of some sort of learning a day with my kids.  Whether it’s a math lesson, handwriting, phonics, spelling whatever.  I want them to keep learning.  We actually didn’t finish all of our Family School Lessons for the school year, and since my kids LOVE the lessons we will do a couple of those a week also.

When I think of summer I think of hiking, swimming, lots of Popsicles, going to movies, going on a summer vacation and playing with friends.  It’s important to have fun during the summer.  So I make sure we plan one fun thing a day in the summer to do with the kids!  I made up this chart for anyone that wants to use it.  This is what we are going to do for our summer days…

Every Sunday we are going to fill out the list on the left of something fun we want to do during each day that week.  I used to have each day be a theme, like cooking, friends, crafting etc.  But last year we didn’t end up doing it because something would come up, or we didn’t have the money to buy it or wheat ever.  So this year I thought we would fill it out after we calendared for the week.  We are going to use ideas off the list I made below.

At the top right is their jobs.  I have 4 kids that can do jobs and we have 4 main jobs.  Obviously one of my kids can’t do them by himself and another sometimes needs help.  This school year the kids had a different job each day.   They decided they wanted to try it this way.  They all hate to vacuum or sweep and mop so I told them if they did it this way they would do it one week of the month and be done!  They liked that idea.  Also the person that does garbage’s is also in charge of the pets that week since they have to go outside to do garbage’s anyway.  We will see how it works out.
As you can see I wrote a list of daily chores I expect them to have done by the end of the day.  Obviously the stuff on the left is stuff to get done in the morning, and the other stuff they can choose when to do it.  I forgot to put music practice in their which we will also be doing.  I also put the one hour thing in just so we don’t get carried away with technology and waist our summer away.  If they want to watch a movie I am not going to turn it off at the hour mark!  Mostly it is for the wii, my 5 year old could play it all day if I let him.
Here is a list of 120 Summer Fun Activities.  I found ideas all over the web and took the ones I would actually enjoy doing or that we could afford!

The internet can be so overwhelming with all of the ideas! Especially with summer! I LOVE LOVE LOVE your idea as it is simple and something I know we can do. I saw a lot of the “theme” ideas, but like you said summers have to be flexible. Its fun to change it up each week anyways. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Thanks for your comment. It true, the internet can be super overwhelming. I like to stick with simplicity! I’ve tried the themes for everything from summer actives and meal time. I find that just planning something is way easier than making it a theme!
