Family Travel in an RV – Why We Love It

June 10, 2016 by The Things I Love Most

I am really excited to tell you all about our trip we went on last month.  We had the time of our lives!  We took our kids on their first plane ride to Chicago and then they had their first rental car experience and then we picked up an RV in Indiana and drove all the way back to Utah! People laughed when I told them I was taking my kids on this trip, with 4 boys they knew it might be a little much, but I knew they would be great.  They were amazing on the plane, yup, all 5 of them were great, no crying, whining or complaining, they stayed right by us in the airport and loved every second of it!  Then we took a shuttle to our rental car place and drove 2 hours to Elkhart Indiana to pick up an RV for Access RV in Salt Lake!  The kids couldn’t believe we could do all that  before 5:00 pm!
Family Travel in an RV - Why We Love ItWe were so excited to get going in the RV.  As you can see my kids and I were ecstatic….except we don’t know how to take jumping pictures! We got a 32 ft. Class C Motorhome and it was the perfect size for our family of 7.  You could probably fit a couple more people in it.  None of my kids had to share a bed and we all sat comfortably.  Family Travel in an RVMy family went on a church history trip a few years ago, and we were too poor to go, so we were so excited to get to do this trip with our family. I will blog more about the details of each place we went next week, but our trip entailed Nauvoo, Carthage, Far West, Adam-ondi-ahmen, Liberty Jail, Independence, Kanesville, Winter Quarter, Ingalls Homestead in De Smet, Mount Rushmoore, Crazy Horse, and Martins Cove. We did it all in 9 days, and could have gone longer.  The kids, for the most part, got along really well (once we got rid of all electronic devices so that no one was fighting over the iPad)! I thought for todays post I would share a little bit about Family Travel in an RV and why we love it! I asked my husband and kids why they loved it and here are their answers. Church History RV Roadtrip

Family Travel in an RV – Why We Love It

  • Because you don’t have to sit confined between siblings on a long drive.
  • Because you can move around and not have to be contained in one spot
  • Because you could eat and watch TV
  • Because it was fun and I got to sleep on a cool bed – The liked to call it a “Ta-bed” A table that turns into a bed!
  • We were comfortable while driving
  • We didn’t have to stop for potty breaks
  • We didn’t have to worry about luggage. We unpacked in the drawers and stored the luggage in the bottom of the RV.
  • We saved money by making our own meals
  • We felt less pressure to get somewhere, because the reason you have an RV is to enjoy the ride.
  • If we were tired you could go sleep on the bed instead of a chair

Family Travel in an RV - Why We Loved It

There are plenty more reasons that I loved it. I felt like our family bonded!  It was fun because along the way we could decide where we wanted to stay.  We could Boondock in a Walmart parking lot, which we did a lot, or if we needed hookups we could stay at an RV park which we did a couple of times! I’m pretty sure you save money traveling in an RV, or at least you spend the same amount.  With hotel travel you have to pay per night, plus rent a car if you fly, gas, plus eating out.  In an RV you do it all in one place!Family Travel in an RV - Why We Loved It

If you haven’t ever been in an RV and are planning a road trip, I would totally recommend it.  We are already talking about when we are going to do our next big trip, and it will for sure include an RV! I loved working with Access RV in Salt Lake, they rent RV’s and they also sell them! If you haven’t ever driven an RV they have great training videos to help with that!  My son even watched them and reminded my husband about a few things! The people at Access RV are great to work with and want you to have wonderful vacations!   Check out their Website HERE and their FACEBOOK page HERE.

Come back next week where I will give you  details about our amazing RV family church history road trip!
