When I’m a Missionary {Book Review}

November 6, 2015 by The Things I Love Most

“Mommy, I want to go on a mission right now!” said my 4 year old!  “I don’t ever want to go on a mission, that’s too scary!”  said my 7 year old.  My kids feel a bit excited or nervous about missions. I have a couple of kids who can’t wait to grow up and go on a mission and a couple who think is sounds like the scariest thing ever.  One of my boys says he never wants to leave home 🙂 I know the feeling. Growing up I never had a desire to serve a mission because it would be hard and scary.  Now I wish I would have served a mission because it would have been amazing and wonderful, along with a huge testimony builder and an amazing challenge.  I never served a mission. I got married before I turned 21. With the age of mission changing to 18 and 19 my kids will have the opportunity to choose to serve a mission right out of high school.  To be honest, I never want them to leave home, and it scares me to death, but at the same time I can’t wait for them to have that experience!  For them to go and to strengthen their own testimony of the gospel and to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with others! I know that each of my children will be amazing missionaries if they are prepared!

When I’m  Missionary

We received this book, When I’m a Missionary,  a few weeks ago from Deseret Book and I was very excited to read it to my kids!  It’s about family who’s brother just got home from his mission and teaches his younger brother and sister what it will be like when they are a missionary, and how to prepare.  Going on a  mission takes a lot of preparation. WhenImaMissionary_spread_2

Here is a brief description of the book….

Lace and Julian’s big brother, Elliott, has just returned from his mission, and they’re excited—excited that he’s home and excited to learn about how to prepare to be great missionaries themselves. And there’s a lot to do—they had no idea how much goes into becoming a good missionary. From dressing the part to talking to people to learning how to clean and cook, Julian and Lacey discover the challenges and the rewards of preparing to serve a mission. Follow their adventures as they learn all about missionary work and what they can do now to become great missionaries when they grow up.

The book is written by Merrily Browne Boyack and Illustrated by Brian Call.  I love the story, and the illustrations. This book is a sweet, simple and wonderful book that will help children understand the importance of preparing themselves for a mission!
