Our Favorite Kid Shows

January 29, 2013 by The Things I Love Most

As you know (maybe) we decided to not have cable TV about 6 years ago.  We do have a television to watch movies on and we watch Netflix on the computer every time we get a new debit card and get 30 days free 🙂 (Shh don’t tell), but we lived without a TV for 3 months a few years back and decided we really liked it.  There is so much junk on telelvision (as there is internet), but I just didn’t want my kids flipping through channels and being sucked into stupid (or possibly bad) shows.  One of the reason I love not having TV is it limits my kids viewing.  They don’t watch a show and then want to watch the one after that and the one after that.  They don’t have to see ANY commercials, and I don’t get sucked into too many shows at once.  I usually watch one episode of something per season and watch it online (like Downton Abbey right now & Biggest Loser last year), but I think I would waste to much time in the evenings watching TLC or The Food Network 🙂  Which isn’t bad, I just don’t want to waste the time.

So some of our favorites are  PBS Kids (basically anything on there), Signing Time (We bought the DVD’s), and Backyardagins. I really like these shows becuase they are fun, interactive and gets the kids to use their imagination.   (My kids are 1-9 and even my 9 year old is ok to watch most of these shows, which is fine by me.) She also loves the American Girl Movies.

But their absolute favorites, that I will let them watch dailyafter school (for 30mins-1 hour) because they are educational are…

Wild Kratts

A new episode of Wild Kratts comes on about once a week, so daily they will get on and check to see if the new episode is up and when it is they BEG me to let them watch it.  They all sit around the computer and watch it.  It is fun and exciting and they are learning so much.  Seriously my kids can tell me all about different kinds of animals and where they live and everything interesting about them.

Magic School Bus: The Complete Series
I bought this really awseome box set from Costco with 8 DVD’s and all 58 episodes of Magic School Bus.  They love these and I really don’t mind them watching a couple episodes.  They are short and they teach all sorts of stuff about Science.
