Letters in the Jade Dragon Box and a Giveaway

February 1, 2012 by The Things I Love Most

5063012_letters_jade_box_detail

I love history…but I have a hard time reading history books.  I really like to learn about history by reading novels.  I was excited when I received this book from Deseret Book.  China is a place I don’t know a lot about and I have been interested to learn more about.  This book, by Gale Sears, who also wrote The Silence of God, wrote this book The Jade Dragon Box moving from writing about the Soviet Union to China and the hardships of Communism and the rule of Mao Tes-tung and the time following his death.  I really enjoyed reading this book and learned a lot about communism, the Church in Hong Kong and the hardships that people have gone through.  Makes me grateful.

The book is based on real life events.  It’s a story about a girls who at a young age was able to escape communist China to live with her Uncle in Hong Kong, who was also one of the first members of the church in Hong Kong.  Somehow her mother, who still lived in China was able to send her a box, some art and letters when the girl was 15 years old.   It was great timing for her because she had a lot of question about her life and needed some answers.  Through the letters she reads she was able to remember her past, learn to forgive and ….{you will have to read the book to find out more}

The author shares a lot about writing this book here…

    Looks fascinating! My husband and I spend several weeks in China before we had kids, it was such an amazing experience, I love reading anything about China!

    We are always on the lookout for a good book. My husband and I love to read aloud…to each other and to our kids. It helps us keep that television off and spend some good quality time together.

    The book sounds great. Went to China about a year ago and studied some about the church history there. Fascinating–this would add to my understanding!
