At the Pulpit: 185 Years of Discourses by Latter-day Saint Women

February 22, 2017 by The Things I Love Most

I love listening to great inspirational talks!  Some of my absolute most favorite talks have been by women during General Conference. When I was asked to review this new new book called At the Pulpit: 185 Years of Discourses by Latter-day Saint Women I knew I would like it.  At the Pulpit: 185 Years of Discourses by Latter-day Saint Women

My Review:

I actually have not read the whole book because it’s very big. But I have looked through it and seen all the fabulous women and their talks that have been highlighted.  I am sure it was hard for the people that compiled the book to pick just one talk from women like Sheri Dew and Ardith Kapp. The book starts with older discourses from women like Lucy Mack Smith, Elizabeth A. Whitney, Emma Hale Smith, and goes all the way through time of great Latter day Saints women such as Sarah M. Kimball,  Ardith Kapp, Virginia Pierce, and Linda K Burton.  At the Pulpit has over 54 discourses given by Latter-Day Saint women throughout the history of the church. each chapter starts out shariing a little bit about the person and who they are. And then it goes into their discourse or talk that they gave either at firesides, devotional or General Conference. I love sister Okazakis talk, and of course Sheri Dew who is one of my favorite women speakers.  It was also really cool reading the older accounts given in the 1800’s.  This is a very cool resource to own and I’m excited to have it in our home!

At the Pulpit showcases the tradition of Latter-day Saint women’s preaching and instruction by presenting 54 speeches given from 1831 to 2016, with selections from every decade since the founding of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The discourses, given by women both well known and obscure, represent just some of the many contributions of women to Latter-day Saint thought. In addition to being a scholarly history, At the Pulpit is intended as a resource for contemporary Latter-day Saints as they study, speak, teach, and lead. These discourses allow readers to hear the historical and contemporary voices of Latter-day Saint women–voices that resound with experience, wisdom, and authority.
