Memorizing Scriptures

October 10, 2011 by The Things I Love Most

Ever since I was little my mom would help us memorize scriptures from The Book of Mormon as part of our daily family devotional.  As I grew up I memorized scriptures for seminary and eventually in college memorized The Family: A Proclamation to the World.  From all this, I still struggle with remembering scriptures and finding where they are.  I decided with my kids this year we are going to memorize scriptures that have helped me in my life.  We have started with the Articles of Faith, since to me it is a huge foundation for our religion and very important for my children to not only memorize but understand.  We spend a week on each scripture and not only memorize it but talk about it and it’s meaning and how we can apply it to our lives.

I loved the talk The Power of Scriptures by Richard G. Scott given at conference.

Richard G. Scott“Scriptures are like packets of light that illuminate our minds and give place to guidance and inspiration from on high.”
Great power can come from memorizing scriptures. To memorize a scripture is to forge a new friendship. It is like discovering a new individual who can help in time of need, give inspiration and comfort, and be a source of motivation for needed change.

This quote brought me great comfort in helping me know that I was leading my kids in the right direction.  I remember small little moments in my life when I was in a situation and words from a scripture came into my mind and I felt comforted.

A scripture I think about on a weekly basis is D&C 6:36
“Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not.”

Elder Scott went on to say…
Pondering a scripture like that gives great direction to life. The scriptures can form a foundation of support. They can provide an incredibly large resource of willing friends who can help us. A memorized scripture becomes an enduring friend that is not weakened with the passage of time.
Pondering a passage of scripture can be a key to unlock revelation and the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Ghost. Scriptures can calm an agitated soul, giving peace, hope, and a restoration of confidence in one’s ability to overcome the challenges of life. They have potent power to heal emotional challenges when there is faith in the Savior. They can accelerate physical healing.
Scriptures can communicate different meanings at different times in our life, according to our needs. A scripture that we may have read many times can take on nuances of meaning that are refreshing and insightful when we face a new challenge in life.

I am grateful for my “friendship” that I have with the scriptures, I KNOW they are true.  I hope to better my study of the scriptures so that I can become closer to my Savior, Jesus Christ and try to become more like him.  It is true what he says about how “Scriptures can calm an agitated soul, giving peace, hope, and a restoration of confidence in one’s ability to overcome the challenges of life.”  Even just reading a few verses a day brings peace into my life and help me through my days!

If you don’t have a Book of Mormon and would like one you may email me and I will be happy to send you one or you can also read the Book of Mormon online HERE.

I think about D&C 6:36 all the time too. I need it to get through life and make daily choices.

    Thanks.
