Goals! Does your family have them?

April 26, 2010 by The Things I Love Most

I love to set goals! Yup that’s right, I said “SET” them, but it can be so hard to achieve them. These last two years our family has been working really hard to achieve goals and learn self discipline!

I love this talk by Elder Ballard called “Go For It!” It is so important to have self discipline and to teach our kids the same! I love the quote where he says, “When you learn to master the principle of setting a goal, you will then be able to make a great difference in the results you attain in this life.”

A few years ago, I was at my sisters house and she had this really great goal list up on her fridge. She is such a great example to me in goal setting, and so I decided to copy her. We have been doing this for two years now and have it up on our fridge. We don’t always look at it, but we do glance at it every so often, and at the end of each year we see where we are! Last year we accomplished most of them! It is super important to teach your kids to set goals, and to work hard at them. Here is our goal list from last year. We set family goals and then we each set personal goals. We came up with our own categories and went from there. It took about thirty minutes during family night!

Some of these goals were hard, some we didn’t achieve and are still working on them. Set high goals, but also reasonable in attaining. Recently I set a goal to loose weight by not eating sugar or grains for 60 days. {I will talk about that more later on} It has been SO hard, but I only have 7 days left. I definitely couldn’t have done it without Gods help and praying daily to be able to reach my goal.

This lesson here can also be helpful in setting personal and family goals. It says in the lesson …The Lord said, “All victory and glory is brought to pass unto you through your diligence, faithfulness, and prayers of faith” (D&;C 103:36). As we work diligently, obey the commandments, and pray, we can accomplish our righteous goals. Each day is an opportunity to come a little closer to achieving our goals. We can also make special efforts to help family members reach their goals.

Pray for guidance to set and also achieve your goals. God really does care, even if it is to just learn to throw a ball or play soccer.

Does your family set goals? If not “Go for It”! It will bring you closer as a family and closer to each other and God as you strive to work hard to fulfil those goals and have a more satisfying life!
