I love this quote by Josh Jameson that says, “There comes a time when you have to choose between turning the page and closing the book.” That my friends is SO hard to do! Especially at night when the night light is on, the kids are all asleep, my husband is snoozing away next to me and I need to read a good book to help me “fall asleep” Which if they are as good as this new book, The Governess by Kristen McKendry, it is really hard to fall asleep reading. By 2 in the morning my eyes are so exhausted I drop the book on my face and fall asleep!
I loved every single page of this book, The Governess. Kate’s parents have died, all of her money is gone to pay off her fathers debts. Her only relative is a cousin who offers to take her in, but hangs it over he heard how much they are helping her. She decides to take matters into her own hands even if it lowers her social class status and leave the home of her cousin to become a working women, a governess, by either tutoring or become a ladies companion. After many jobs that were short term she ends up jobless, fearful of returning to her cousins and searching for just the right place to find work. She stops to buy tea one day and meets a man who is wiling to hire her. When she finds out where he lives she is shocked! I don’t want to tell you too much about the book but lets’ just say there are so many wonderful little twist and unexpected things that happen in this book I know you will love it.
It is a lovely read and I can’t wait to read more books by Kristen McKendry in the future. I love her writing style. I love how she was able to pull me into each character so that I felt like I knew them. I loved Millie, and how she knew all along how Kate felt and was just waiting for Kate to finally recognize her true feelings. I loved Alonzo’s character. I loved the kind of person he was, the kind of father he was and the way treated everyone. There are so many great principles you can pull away from this book. Even thought we don’t live during the social class times, there are still many that still think it they drive better cars, wear nicer clothes and look better all around that they are better people. I love that this book shows that true love is loving something for who they really are, not for what they can provide for you. It is selfless love where you look beyond you
